"At first, it started out as kind of a hobby and he wanted to help out local bands."
The End Records is a New York-based indie record label. We chat with Caitlin and Caroline from The End Records to learn a little more about what The End has been up to and how they got started.
What is the End and how did it start?
Caitlin: Our Founder and CEO, Andreas Katsambas started the label in California, 1998. At first, it started out as kind of a hobby, he wanted to help out local bands. He started a web store and started distributing the CDs, then it started growing. He ended up moving to New York and sign a national distribution deal with Sony Red. I think we were with for the last five years. Then we signed a worldwide distribution through EDA.
What are some of the major artist that the End have and came out with?
Caitlin: The past year we released Petula Clark’s album. She’s the songstress who wrote and perform, “Downtown”. She was part of the whole British invasion with the Beatles. She just released her new solo album this past year. We also did Fat Boy Slim’s live album and DVD From The Big Beach Boutique Parties. There’s only two of those. We also released The Mission or also formerly known as The Mission UK. They are kind of a goth rock band known for starting the whole genre. There’s also Hey! Hello! which is a project that Ginger Wildheart and his fellow songstress Victoria Liedtke got together to create this really cool album. We also do a lot more indie artist kind of sub level underground genre. It’s kind of a mix of everything.
Speaking of a wide genre of artist, how do you guys discover new music and who gets to decide which artists are signed to the End Records?
Caitlin: Well a lot of our artists we get are through our distributors. So they’ll get information on an artist that they really like. Then they kind of shop around for labels that are sign listed and pitch the information to them. We get a lot of traffic that way because we are one of the bigger indie labels and we do cover a wide variety of genres. We also have a very good in house team. We also get straight pitches. We have a demo email and artists can send us music directly. Things that we look for: if they kind of already have a fan base built up. Any kind of press or tours they are going on, a lot of different factors. We all kind of send music around and see what everybody thinks. Andreas have the final say on who we sign.
What are the two of you listening to? What’s currently SoundTracking your life?
Caitlin: We listen to one of all our favorite releases that we’ve done is American Sharks. They’re very cool. Very upbeat, party, hard rock, so they’re a lot of fun.
Caroline: We also listen to a lot of alternative, indie stuff.
Caitlin: There’s this great band called Okta Logue that is psychedelic rock. We always have music playing in the office and we all just kind of get to choose what we get to listen to during the day so it can range from singer songwriter to hip hop. Pretty much anything.
How did the two of you get in to music?
Caitlin: I was actually a classical bassist. I moved to New York to go to a Music Conservatory. Then I started taking some music business classes and decided to get my masters and I actually started interning at the End while I was doing that and then I got hired. So, that was pretty fun.
Caroline: I was actually in France before coming to New York. I like music so, I wondered why not work in music? So I interned in a venue first and then I came to America. I interned at Billboard before interning at the End. Then I got hired.
Caitlin: Ha-ha yeah, I hired her.
What bands are touring right now and who should we keep an eye out for?
Caitlin: Definitely American Sharks, they are on tour right now with The Sword. We also have this other great band called Dead Letter Circus that are currently on tour with Periphery, Born of Osiris, and Twelve Foot Ninja. Every year we do a showcase for our artists by SXSW. That’s always a lot of fun and we usually try to set up tours around there as well.
Can you describe how competitive, crazy the music New York scene is?
Caitlin: The New York music scene is definitely very alive. There is so many venues and concerts going on all the time. That being said, it’s still very competitive to get people out to your shows. People are busy and it depends on what borough and venue it is at. Overall I think it’s a really good experience and that’s why most artist like to come over here and tour. Because there’s so much opportunities and so many places to play. There’s so much New York press and radio here. It really can be a very good leaping off point for an artist career to come tour here.
