"The Automatic tour is one of the best we’ve ever played. We’ve made a point to make our shows really special for our fans." - Adam Taylor
As Iration’s AutomaticTour is coming to an end, we were excited to chat with bass player and soundtracker Adam Taylor about music, Automatic and more! We had no idea that he liked British indie rock just as much as we did! Iration’s Automatic was released July 2nd, 2013.
Tell us a little bit about Iration’s newest album Automatic.
For us, it was a long time coming. We had a lot of material for Automatic, a variety of music on the album. It’s a bit more mature than our last LP Time Bomb. Also, I love experimenting with different sounds. It was our first time using digital drums, acoustic guitars and inviting other musicians on the tracks as well. The whole process was really cool.
Lead singer Micah mentioned in another interview that the album’s title track “Automatic” was written for the fans. Can you tell us a little more about what that means?
Micah write that song as a way to give back to the fans. When you listen to the beat especially, it’s really kind of a true Iration sound. We made a video for it too where it was all shot on GoPro at all of our shows. We were able to include our fans in the video! It was just a really cool way to give back to everyone that has supported us over the years. It’s a fun song to play with a great groove.
All members of Iration are originally from Hawaii, but the band formed in Santa Barbara. Where did you all meet?
All of us actually met in Hawaii. Some of the guys are childhood friends. We didn’t start the band until we moved to California. It was just when we all started living in Santa Barbara that we started playing music as a hobby and since then it’s graduated into what it is now.
Even though you’re familiar with Island life, but if you were stranded on a deserted island, what album would you take with you and why?
Hmm. Give me a second to think about that…
I guess I would take Catch a Fire by Bob Marley. I enjoy a lot of Bob’s albums, but that specific album has a lot of influence and history with me and making music. I never really took bass lessons and I used to play that CD on repeat and learned all the bass lines. My neighbors that lived below me used to complain that I would be playing that album non stop, but that’s basically how I taught myself to play bass. I think about being on an island and that would be a pretty cool album to have.
The fact that you’re not on a deserted island, what’s SoundTracking your life right now?
We were recently introduced to the new Arctic Monkey’s album AM. I just started listening to it, haven’t gotten all the way through and from what I’ve heard off it, it’s really really good. So I’ll be spending the next few days listening to that album. Other than that I’ve been listening to some Two Door Cinema Club, Capital Cities. I like a lot of the old reggae stuff. I’ve been digging into Gregory Isaacs and stuff like that. I was having a chat with our bus driver and asking him what he was doing after our tour and he said, “Some band named Two Door Cinema something have you heard of them?” I said, “Oh my gosh, they’re awesome!” I’ll definitely have to catch them live when they stop in LA.
Iration plays tonight at The Fillmore in San Francisco and tomorrow at The Wiltern in Los Angeles! Check out some of their lucky fans who get to catch their shows this weekend: http://bit.ly/18A2K7I
